Vasectomy Reversal San Francisco

What Happens During a Vasectomy Reversal?

An increasing number of men and couples in the United States are electing to attempt vasectomy reversal, San Francisco residents included. In fact, despite the relatively new nature of the procedure, between 6 and 12 percent of men who have undergone vasectomy ultimately decide to seek a vasectomy reversal doctor for another chance at conception. It is important to be informed about what happens during a vasectomy reversal prior to seeking a doctor.

What It Does

While a vasectomy stops a male’s ability to conceive, a vasectomy reversal restores the possibility of conception. Prospective patients should keep in mind that a vasectomy reversal cannot be 100 percent guaranteed for success, and there are a number of factors that may affect the outcome, including the choice of fertility doctor. During a vasectomy, the vas deferens – which is the tube that carries sperm into the seminal stream – is cut and sealed off, in order to stop sperm from being ejaculated during sexual intercourse. The process of vasectomy reversal involves removing the surgical scar resulting from vasectomy and rejoining the ends of the vas deferens. The success rate can depend on whether a rupture has occurred at the epididymus, a tubal structure that is located in front of the vas deferens and can become blocked if excess sperm is not absorbed into the body quickly enough.

Process and Recovery

The typical vasectomy reversal process is a half-day procedure, which is treated as an outpatient process. The patient is given a general anesthetic during the operation, and must be driven home from the clinic. Complete physical recovery from vasectomy reversal occurs in about 4 weeks, and conception may take place 6 to 18 months following a vasectomy reversal.

As a CEO of a national healthcare company, I work with many physicians nationwide. I can sincerely say that Dr. Spitz is an outstanding physician and person on multiple levels. Clinically, he is no doubt a leader in the field of urology. More recently, it has come to my attention that Dr. Spitz is writing a book about sexual health issues and society, combining clinical insight as well as practical observations for society, addressing many of the sexual concerns people have. Very much looking forward to reading this because of his clinical expertise, keen insight on sexual and social issues, and incredible sense of humor, a combination that is rare.
